A heart-wrenching rescue story unfolds, leaving us with a powerful reminder of the delicate balance between nature and human intervention. An owl, entangled in a soccer net, was saved but faced an unseen danger.
In September, the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center (RRW) received a call that tugged at their heartstrings. A homeowner had found a great horned owl trapped in his son's soccer netting, a situation all too familiar to the RRW staff. But here's where it gets controversial: the homeowner had already untangled the owl, raising concerns about potential hidden injuries.
An experienced volunteer arrived at the scene, only to find the owl confined and drenched, having fallen into a pool while seeking shelter. The owl's wide-eyed, soaked appearance tugged at the volunteer's heartstrings, prompting a swift rescue and a trip to RRW's headquarters.
"There are often unseen injuries with these animals," RRW wrote, emphasizing the importance of a thorough examination. And they were right. During the routine check-up, the staff made a life-altering discovery: the netting was still tightly wrapped around the owl's neck, a potentially fatal situation.
The veterinary team sprang into action, carefully removing the netting and treating the owl's neck and other wounds to prevent infection. After some much-needed rest, the owl was moved to a flight cage, where he regained his strength and began flying with resilience.
Weeks passed, and the owl's recovery was nothing short of remarkable. He graduated from the recovery habitat, flying with ease and strength, ready to return home. The release day was a joyous occasion, with the owl disappearing into the dense trees, blending seamlessly with his surroundings.
"It's a wonderful feeling to see them know they are home," RRW wrote, expressing the joy of witnessing a successful recovery. While the owl's initial entanglement could have been prevented with proper storage of unused netting, his rescuers were honored to play a part in his journey back to health.
